South of Jaco, on the way to Quepos and Manuel Antonio, the well-paved
Costanera Sur highway curves along the Central Pacific Coast, passing many quiet, deserted beaches just short turn-offs from the highway. The tiny beach communities of Esterillos and Bejuco feel fantastically remote and relaxing as a result.
Just 20 km (12.5 mi) south of Jaco lies the first of such communities, and probably the one with the most services, Esterillos Oeste (Esterillos West). This fishing village has a few restaurants, sodas and bars, such as the Low Tide Lounge, that are worthwhile exploring. As in all these villages, you will find a small grocery store (pulperia) that carries basic goods and beverages. Not to be missed is the sight of the little mermaid statue (La Sirenita) built some 100 meters away from the beach by a grieving father to mourn the loss of his young daughter.
Next down the road, in order, are Esterillos Centro (Center), Esterillos Este (East) and Playa Bejuco. Here, the restaurant offer is more limited but there are some interesting places worth the detour, including an Italian restaurant on top of a hill at the Monterey development in Esterillos Este.
These sandy cinnamon beaches draw some vacationing
tico families and local surfers during the Christmas holidays and
Semana Santa (Holy Week), but otherwise the long, palm fringed, pristine beaches remain yours to discover.
These flat beaches combine the best of both worlds since they have powerful waves that break away from the shore that then become smaller and smaller waves. These are a hit with small children and even toddlers can enjoy the ocean in the tidal pools that form on low tide every day. Children also enjoy the myriad of shells and the tiny and harmless hermit crabs that pop out of their sandy hideaways.
Surfing is good for all levels at several of these beaches, especially Esterillos Oeste and Playa Bejuco, where big waves break on soft sand.
We offer vacation rental villas and houses in Esterillos, including on the beachfront. If you prefer a panoramic view of both mountains and ocean, then choose to stay at our Del Pacifico luxury rental homes, just five minutes uphill from the beach.
